How do cars get stuck on train tracks so often?

Mrs.10/18/08 asked:

In my city, there have been 3 reports of people almost getting hit by trains with their cars on the tracks lately. Also, My fiance’s best friend’s ENTIRE family was killed in this manner several years ago.

I guess I just have a hard time understanding how it happens - I mean, why wouldn’t they be able to just move their car? Or get out of the car? Is there some common denominator as to why it happens when it comes to accidents of this nature?

Car Alarm Systems

November 4th, 2008

carazoo.com asked:

Today millions and billions of people are investing in car alarm system. The reason behind the increasing amount of investment in alarm system is that these days the carazoo.com has become a major issue. Most of the car thieves are mastering the art of stealing and revamping the cars to start off their own business of dealing in stolen cars.

Car alarm system is the best way to reduce the increasing crime and keep our new cars protected. It is a system loaded with sensors, sirens and signals that gives a warning alarm in case of car theft. The basic version of the car alarm system comprises of a switch on the driver’s door that is wired to the siren. If anyone opens the door, siren will start wailing.

As India is coming up with new and high tech cars, the anti theft alarm system is also getting sophisticated and better in all aspects. The latest Indian cars are equipped with modern anti theft systems comprising various kinds of sensors, siren, radio receivers, auxiliary battery and computer control unit with a sophisticated and more secured output. Different sensors loaded at different places detect the motion, touch and pressure on the car. Siren is used to yield sounds in case of car theft. Radio receiver helps in permitting wireless control and keeps the owner informed. Auxiliary battery works as a replacement if the original battery is not charged up or functional. Lastly, all these working and operations of the system is controlled and monitored by the computer control unit.

Sensors are powered controlled devices that receive and respond to a stimulus. In modern car alarm system, there are mainly five different types of sensors that respond to various different stimuli or actions based on which part of the car is targeted.

Following are some of the most common types of sensors loaded in modern car alarm system:

Car-Alarm Door Sensors

This is the basic sensor that responds when a car thief opens any door of the car. Immediately, the car owner gets a signal. The sensor is either connected to a siren or to the interior lights. When the thief opens a car, switching mechanism built in the car door transfer electricity to the interior lights and alerts the thief.

Car-Alarm Shock Sensors

Shock sensors help a great deal in deterring thieves and vandals. If a car thief hits or moves any car, these sensors send a signal based on the kinetic velocity of the car. If the car receives a shock and feels an unidentified change in the intensity of motion, a warning alarm beeps. In some cases these sensors are also linked to the fuel engines wherein after detecting a drastic change in the intensity of motion, fuel engine automatically stops supplying fuel to the engine.

Car-Alarm Window and Pressure Sensors

These sensors are the main detectors for detecting broken windows. If a car thief hits the window of the car and breaks it down, these sensors detect the sound or the air pressure of the car. These sensors are connected to a microphone which in turn monitors the air pressure and in case of any variants, the air pressure fluctuation converts to electric current which is send to main controlling unit. In this way, specific sound will trigger the alarm and keep the thief away.

Car-Alarm Motion and Tilt Sensors

These sensors become functional when a car thief tows and drags the car to a safe place. Such sensors comprise o perimeter scanners that monitor any tilt, lifting and even slight movement of the car. Through these scanners it is also easy to monitor all the activities within a predetermined perimeter of the car park. Once the motion is scanned, the radio transmitter sends signal that are reflected by the receiver monitors. Similarly, tilt detectors are series of mercury switches made up of two electrical wires and a ball of mercury. This series of switches conducts electricity. In case of any car tilt or lifting, these electrical wires change the flow of circulation and warn the thief.

Top 7 Myths About Environmentally Friendly Cars

October 30th, 2008
cars
Carssure asked:

One can never believe every word in online or newspaper articles by 100 percent because there are always misconceptions and false information. When it comes to green cars, which include electric, cell-powered, hybrid and solar cars, we discover several myths about them as well. Some of them are just useful for car manufacturers; the others come as a result of common misunderstanding. Nevertheless one should think those facts over if one considers buying a green car.

Myth #1 - Greenest Cars Are Very Expensive

Most people believe that environmentally friendly cars are sold at a high price and are not affordable for people with low income. However there are some electric cars that cost as much as average gasoline vehicles.

Myth #2 – With a Green Car There Are No High Maintenance Expenses

Even though a green car may seem to be a reliable mechanism made of durable parts, driving and using such a car has some hidden maintenance expenses. Since electric cars run on rechargeable batteries they need to be recharged quite often which might be rather costly considering the price for electricity nowadays. Moreover sooner or later rechargeable batteries will have to be replaced with new ones which are quite expensive as well.

Myth #3 – Greenest Cars Are The Most Environmentally Friendly

It’s true that green cars help to reduce pollution and produce less exhaust fumes than most conventional gasoline vehicles but as a matter of fact greenest cars are not that green. Even though some hybrid cars run on electric power or hydrogen at low speeds combined with usage of a gasoline engine only at higher speeds, they still use a lot of gas and do pollute the atmosphere. Some specialists believe that buying a small economy car is more environmentally friendly than buying a powerful hybrid car.

Myth #4 – Greenest Cars Are Widely-Spread

With all the big talk and spirited debates about green cars one may come to a conclusion that these cars are best-selling, widely-distributed and they start “driving” gasoline cars out of the car market. However the production of green cars makes only 1.8 percent of the whole US car market and it will take quite a long time before they start playing any considerable part in it.

Myth #5 – All Green Cars Are Absolutely Safe

Driving some types of environmentally friendly cars such as most cell-powered and some hybrid cars with hydrogen engines makes them extremely dangerous on the road. In case of any collision the explosion of hydrogen accompanied by oxygen which is also used in such engines might cover vast areas.

Myth #6 – Most Green Cars Are Small and Uncomfortable Inside

This statement might be fair only if we talk about such a representative of green cars as a Smart car. However the majority of environmentally friendly cars is as spacious as conventional vehicles and has a rather big storage space.

Myth #7 – Electric Cars Can Operate Long Hours without Recharging

In fact most electric cars can be driven only 35 miles. After that the batteries need to be recharged. Thus if you travel long distances by car an electric vehicle is not what you need.

Taking Advantage of Online Car Sites

October 29th, 2008

jabo asked:

One of the newest trend nowadays is shopping online. You may search for any item that you desire and have it delivered right through your doorstep. It is convenient, easy and fast. No need to drive around town searching for a specific product, no need to walk around the mall to window shop and there definitely is no need to drive along communities to search for garage sales.

One product that is also available online are new or used cars for sale, car services and a lot of updates about the newest trends and models. Though it is joyful but envious to the people who own them, to stare at the newest luxury or sports car, many or most of us couldn’t afford to have one so we just settle on used cars.

The good thing about cars being sold online is that you can also take advantage of these car sites to get the best car deal for you and take home a new or used car that best suits your lifestyle, needs and your budget.

Locating a specific car whether a new model, a recent but used model, or a classic or a vintage car or motorcycle, online car sites could be able to locate them all for you in just a click of a mouse. Whichever make or manufacturer you desire, and wherever you live. Online car sites are able to locate cars for you whether they are being sold by an individual owner, a car dealer, a car auction, or a business related to cars. This makes its easier to decide which will be the car you would take home.

Before you think of purchasing a car at any source, you should always determine first factors that could help you deciding which vehicle would be best for you. Ask yourself this questions:

How often will I use it?

-Think that different cars gives out different mileage. If you would be using it on a daily basis, then it would be best if you would purchase a vehicle that could give you a good mileage and that is very easy to maintain.

Will I buy it for my own or for a family?

-If you would be buying it for your own, then size would not be an issue. Small to regular cars to individuals or couples, regular cars to minivans for small families and vans or SUV for bigger families.

How much can I spend for buying it?

-To be able to fully measure on which car you would be able to buy, you should know your budget for purchasing it to know on what are the limits in terms of car prices.

How much can I spend for it-gas, maintenance, repair?

-Cars needs maintenance as well. The most common maintenance that should be done for it is to always fill it up with gasoline, and with the recent fuel prices, it wont be cheap. For certain mileage, cars also needs other maintenance to keep out of trouble-fluids, pads, tires and etc. This timely maintenance will not only save you your life and a lot of trouble but it would also save you gas. Cars that are properly maintained burns less gasoline.

What is the car type that would be best for me-compact, convertible, regular car, SUV, Van, truck?

-It would depend on your taste and of course your needs and lifestyle. If you are the guy who does a lot of traveling but does not need a lot of luggage, then regular cars would be just fine. If you are a guy that needs a car for utilities, then you may consider buying a van or a truck.

Take advantage of these car sites to carefully examine all the cars that you desire. Check if which car holds the best car value and which one will fit your budget. You can locate some features and some car history to determine the cars value. The more damage, crashes and repairs it has gone through, car values decreases and so does its price. If it is properly maintained and timely serviced, the car value almost doesn’t change.

Like shopping for other things, there can also be scams in shopping cars online so always be sure that you examine every factor carefully. And lastly, after you have done all of this and have located your car, the next thing to do is to always drive safe.

What You Should Know About Car Loan Calculators

October 22nd, 2008
cars
Uchenna Ani-Okoye asked:

There are many car loan calculators available to allow you to determine your monthly payment or even your car purchase price.

‘Buy or lease’ car loan calculators are also available. Such calculators are capable of comparing amounts, and will let you see which the better value is for you.

One limitation of a car loan calculator is that it is not a quote. This is because your actual repayments may change based on your individual circumstances.

The features of a car loan calculator are generally similar. Most car loan calculators allow you to put in the amount of money you would like to loan. Afterwards, you can select how many months you would like to pay it back. Finally, you can click the car loan calculator button and see how it works out how much you will end up paying the finance company. This would, of course, depend on how many months you choose and what their annual percentage rate (APR) is.

A car loan calculator can be offered free on the internet as an Excel Spreadsheet Download Area. It is ready to use. All of them have several loan scenarios on one 8×10 printout, allowing you to make quick decisions about your car loan. You can also find car loan calculators online at E-LOAN and Capital One Auto Finance. If you have a PocketPC type PDA, you can download a version of some car loan calculator for PDA. You can use the spreadsheets to compare online auto loan rates to the car dealer auto loan rates. New car financing has never been easier for you.

Here are some general kinds of car loan calculators and see which works best for your car loan needs.

Free Car Loan Calculator - There are tons of free car loan calculators around, especially on the internet. Remember most of the calculators are just to work out what your ideal monthly payments should be and are NOT a quote. There are free car loan calculator links all over the net.

New Car Loan Calculator - New car loan calculators help you work out your ideal monthly payments. A lot of new car loan calculators can be used for a variety of uses like used car loans. With this calculator, you can usually enter your own interest rate for your loan.

Online Auto Loan Calculator - There’s quite a lot of online car loan calculators out there that you can use and you’ll find links to online auto loan calculators that can hopefully help you find the best deal.

Why are car loan calculators useful? You’ll need to calculate your car loan payments and look up dealer costs for cars and trucks. Without the knowledge you have derived from using a car loan calculator, you could miss out on a good deal. Bank and finance companies could take advantage of your lack of research.

As you try to arrive at how much car you can afford with car loan calculators, don’t think in terms of the monthly payment or just of the total price of the car. The monthly payment, as we’ve seen, can be manipulated just as easily and both approaches leave out other costs associated with the car, such as insurance, fuel and maintenance. To truly understand if you can afford a car, you must take all these factors into consideration. There are ‘how much car can you afford?’ calculators which will help you arrive at a close approximation. They work in the same way as car loan calculators.

There’s still more to do before you actually start shopping for a car of your own. Decide whether you should buy a brand new or a pre-owned vehicle and whether you would be better off buying or leasing. There are pros and cons to both questions. Either way, car loan calculators can speed up your decision.

Rinspeed’s first underwater Car

October 17th, 2008
AutomotiveTv asked:

Rinspeed will present its new sQuba, the worlds first diving car, at the Geneva Motor Show (March 6-16). The car is not only able to drive on roads autonomously with a push of a button (thus without a driver, passenger or further assistance), but can also transform into an amphibious vehicle which can be submerged in water up to 10 meters (33 feet). An electric motor with powerful torque drives the rear wheels, while the propulsion on the water is ensured by two propellers in the stern and two powerful jet drives in the bow propelling the vehicle under water while diving. When underwater, the driver and passenger are enclosed in the vehicle thanks to light weight body components made of futuristic Carbon Nano Tubes and are supplied with fresh breathing air by the self-contained on-board system.

Should You Risk Buying a Used Car?

October 15th, 2008
cars
Eric Hill asked:

You have the money. And you are ready to buy a car. But the biggest question is always what type of car you have to buy. Car buyers are always faced with two options – the new cars and the used cars option. Used cars are usually the more tempting alternative. It’s way cheaper, for one thing. But should you risk buying this type?

People who don’t know the first thing about cars may end up buying a second-hand car that looks new on the outside. But little they know that the engine of that car is already a worn-down, worthless machine. When buying a used car, the exteriors are less important that what’s inside. Only when you decide to buy newer cars that you can focus on the sleek and shiny form of the car because new cars have impeccable engines guaranteed.

It is still okay to buy a used car if it is not too old. The first thing to check is always the year of manufacture and the mileage of the car. These data would show you whether the car is a good buy or not. A car that has been used for a long time is more likely to have bigger problems than benefits. You should stay clear of those cars as much as you can.

When buying used cars, stick to the newer models. A year or two behind should still be good. These cars are not as old and as used as the ones older. But even so, you should still look at the mileage of the car. Mileage is an important detail you should never miss out.

Newer used cars are also better because these cars are created with higher quality, thanks to today’s improving car technology. These cars are rarely termed ‘used’ even. Manufacturers call them the CPO cars, or Certified Pre-Owned cars. You can even find these cars from certified car dealers themselves. Oftentimes, these cars are sold, bought back, or traded by their first owners for various reasons.

The CPO program had given used car buyers the assurance that they are getting a car that is useful and not more of a headache. In fact, almost 1.2 million vehicles that were sold a year ago were CPO cars. This only proves that savings and convenience this program is supported by the buying public.

New cars depreciate to almost 20% the moment you drive it off the dealer’s parking lot. This means that even if you buy the car shiny new, you can never sell it to another person for the same price, even if you just bought it a few seconds ago. That’s the underlying truth about brand-new cars. And buying used cars, in a way, is beneficial because they don’t have the tendency to depreciate as much.

Wise buyers don’t have to go through the risks of buying used cars. In fact, there are absolutely no risks for them if they choose right. So before you go ahead and purchase the car you want, you must do a little research. Doing so is important so that you’ll go home with a choice vehicle and not a rundown monster.

Make Your Old Car Look Like New

jabo asked:

New cars are our everlasting addiction. We never can seem to get enough of them. We work hard and save up money just so we can buy a new car, in the mistaken hope that it is a wise investment. Actually, new cars are never an investment; they lose value the moment you drive off away from the car dealer shop.

Cars can only be investments if 1. You use them for your business, for transporting products perhaps. Or 2. If you’re entering your custom car in a car show and win a price, then that’s an investment. Otherwise, if you’re just buying a new car to have something to drive to work or show around, then you’re just wasting your money. And you’re better off just sticking with your used automobile.

Re-evaluate your wants and wishes and consider repairing and upgrading what you already have. You can add and stamp your own personality to your basic car, by just investing in a few fresh innovative ideas.
